To activate your XM radio, find the Radio ID on channel 0, enter it on the official SiriusXM website or app with a subscription plan, then keep the radio on with a clear view of the sky until your channels unlock. Most activations finish within a few minutes, though some take longer. For many factory-installed car radios, you can also use your vehicle identification number (VIN) instead of the Radio ID.

Quick answer: how to activate XM radio

  • Tune to channel 0 and write down your Radio ID (also called ESN or RID).
  • Go to the official SiriusXM website or app and choose the activation option.
  • Enter your Radio ID or VIN when prompted.
  • Select a plan or trial, confirm your details, and wait for the signal to reach your radio.
Only activate through the official SiriusXM website, app, or customer care. Fake activation sites and phone numbers ask for card details and charge extra fees. This blog never asks for payment.

Before you start

  • Your radio is installed with the antenna connected.
  • You are parked outside, not in a garage, under a bridge, or in covered parking.
  • You have a payment method ready if you choose a paid plan.
  • You know how to find your Radio ID. See Find your Radio ID if needed.

Steps to activate

1

Turn on your radio

Start the car (or power on the home radio) and switch to SiriusXM or SAT mode.
2

Find your Radio ID

Tune to channel 0. Write down the Radio ID exactly as shown. Details: Find your Radio ID.
3

Go to the official activation page

Open the official SiriusXM website or app and choose the option to activate a radio. The official page is at siriusxm.com/activationhelp.
4

Enter the Radio ID or VIN

Type your Radio ID. For many factory-installed car radios, you can use your vehicle’s VIN instead. The official activation page asks, “Please enter your Radio ID or VIN.”
5

Choose a plan and confirm

Select a plan or trial, enter your details, and confirm the order.
6

Wait for the signal

Leave the radio on, tuned to the preview channel (channel 1 on many radios, 184 on some), with a clear view of the sky until your subscribed channels play.

Activation for different situations

Many new and some eligible pre-owned cars include a SiriusXM trial subscription. Almost all new vehicles arrive factory-activated. Follow the instructions from your dealer or the official SiriusXM site to start it; you may only need your VIN. See SiriusXM Free Trial.
The previous owner’s subscription may still be linked. Activate using your own account so the radio is moved to your name. You may need the Radio ID rather than the VIN, especially if the head unit was replaced.
Use the Radio ID shown on channel 0, and place the antenna near a window facing the open sky. Keep the radio on until channels unlock.
Double-check the ID carefully. The letter O and number 0, or letter I and number 1, are easy to mix up. If it still fails, contact SiriusXM customer care through the official site.

What to do if channels do not appear

If your channels remain locked after activation, your radio may not have received the signal yet. Send a refresh signal from the official SiriusXM website while parked outside with the radio on. See Refresh your SiriusXM radio.
